Original Sigma Chi Delta fraternity house

Greetings brothers,

Pictured here is the original Sigma Chi Delta fraternity house at IUP.

The original house is getting a face lift. Dick Clawson Spring ’72, passed the house the other day and wanted to share these pictures.

During the years of 1969 to 1971 this was the first house where many of the founders and first initiates lived. Located on 554 Church Street, behind Al Patti’s bar, the fraternity rented this house during those early years before Sigma Chi bought the property at 246 South 7th Street. Prior to this house, the 20 founders and some pledges lived in five apartments located all across Indiana, some of which were nicknamed ‘The Oasis’, ‘The Pentagon’, and ‘The Bayou’.

“I am pretty sure it was all brothers who lived there along with some overnight ‘guests’ of whom some were fairly permanent.  We only ever had one party at this old house, but it lasted for over two years. If you look closely, you can still see the rotten egg marks from turnabout day when the brothers and pledges literally bought all the eggs from almost every grocery and convenience store in Indiana for an all day battle. This is also where I set the record of 220 shots in the Shot A Minute contest…  aw the memories.” – Carl Bullers, Founder
